The flu (influenza) is a common viral infection that can spread quickly, especially in colder months. While most people recover within a week or two, it can lead to severe complications for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe and healthy this flu season. 

1. Get Vaccinated 

The flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself from the flu. It’s recommended that everyone over the age of six months get vaccinated annually. For those in the UK, flu vaccines are often free for high-risk groups, including: 
 
- People aged 65 and older 
 
- Pregnant women 
 
- Children aged 2 to 17 (offered as a nasal spray) 
 
- Individuals with long-term health conditions. 

2. Practice good hygiene 

Flu viruses spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. To minimise the risk: 
 
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. 
 
- Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water aren’t available. 
 
- Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. 
 
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash your hands.. 

3. Boost your immune system 

A strong immune system can help your body fight off infections. To stay healthy: 
 
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. 
 
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. 
 
- Get regular exercise to keep your body fit and resilient. 
 
- Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. 
 
- Manage stress through relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. 

4. Avoid close contact with unwell individuals 

If you know someone who has the flu, try to maintain a safe distance. If you’re feeling unwell yourself, stay home to avoid spreading the virus to other

While most cases of the flu can be managed at home with rest and over-the-counter remedies, some symptoms require immediate medical attention. Contact us if you experience: 
 
- Persistent high fever 
 
- Severe dehydration 
 
- Symptoms that improve but then return with worsening fever or cough
